I am still researching my project. I now have 5 sources, and 2 scholarly sources. I am starting to outline my paper to keep myself on track. I am progressing nicely on my project, and staying true to my timeline.

look, helvetica everywhere!

I found a great website that outlined exactly the differences between typeface and font: taken from fontfeed stating that: the physical embodiment of a collection of letters, numbers, symbols, etc. (whether it’s a case of metal pieces or a computer file) is a font. When referring to the design of the collection (the way it looks) you call it a typeface. I think the line here is blurred rather easily (one with a collection of the whole and the other with a specific design), and thus makes the two terms interchangeable.

My personal blog has what seems to be at least 2 different types of font, Helvetica and Arial, and many different sizes, 12pt, 14pt and 16pt. I found a new font that appealed to me: it’t titled ‘camphor’ I like it because it is bold, and easy to read. But it still has a distinct character that you can tell it isn’t helvetica — which is EVERYWHERE after watching that video! You can see my font here

flickr? I don’t even know her!

I, like many people, have not used flickr ever. I find it to by a simply mysterious realm of web 2.0 that is still as yet, undiscovered to me. But after doing these readings, I have a much more profound respect and new admiration for flickr. I think the main reason I am not a member of the flickr community is because I don’t take photographs and in no way would consider myself a photographer. Furthermore, I am impressed by the claim the first article, a case study of web 2.0, citing flickr as the most commonly used example of web 2.0.

Digital photography is a wonderful medium that can truly capture a specific moment in time. Be it horrific or happy, the broad spectrum is covered by flickr.And on top of that aspect, it is citizen journalism at it’s finest. All of the photos are shot, and uploaded by citizens of the photography community. It is a great timeline for events, for you on a personal level, or the world on a much larger scale. But then the question arises, as it is presented in the third article, that anyone can then be a photographer. That the ‘framing of the average and mundane’ occurs. I hardly believe that to be the case. Yes, this does allow others to take photographs that might not be of a professional grade and quality, but the chances are these people are working towards learning and understanding aspects of their medium that can make them better at what they do. Or perhaps, they are simply real people taking real photographs.

There still are, and always will be critics of every aspect of life. However for me personally, I appreciate flickr as a medium of varied uses and opportunities. On a professional level it can help to expand your social network, which is the most important way of expanding yourself as a business. On a personal level, it is key to holding on to valuable memor

After doing this, I feel confident that each of my fellow classmates are at the same point in their projects as I am. Each of our timelines sound similar, and with strong ideas of how to effectively communicate our topic in a targeted manner. I appreciate the breadth of topics and difference of ideas each person brings to their certain project. It helps me to think outside of the box, and incorporate other aspects which can be helpful in the success of my project. I am excited to see Meme’s project because it is an interactive one! I wish I had the talent to be that digitally savvy and felt comfortable to put that together in this short amount of time. But since I am not, I will stalk her new wordpress to see the conclusion of her project and find out what type of artist/ stylist she really is!

My perception with twitter hasn’t changed much since taking on this classes. I already enjoy it as a social media platform, and use it in my personal life as a way to stay current with fashion trendsetters. I am grateful learning about all of the other aspects of it, but don’t anticipate me using them personally. But they will be useful if I get one of these social media internships that I have applied for! (*fingers crossed*)

Twitter is actually directly correlated to my project, so you will be hearing a whole bunch more about it. And on a side note, I am really excited about the scholarly paper that I have found that will be a part of my project, it just sounds interesting!

Thesis Statement:

Twitter is a distinct, valuable tool that can be utilized to improve a businesses generation of news and relevant topics. In the same way it can help, certain aspects can hinder a companies reputation in moments. My paper will show both aspects, and likewise compare traditional communication mediums (such as the NY times) to the use of twitter as social media.

Time Line:

MONDAY FEBRUARY 20: Update Timeline; 6 sources and a statement of how each source relates to paper

Week of FEBRUARY 20: Structure, outline paper, revise thesis statement – finalize. Draft 1.

Week of FEBRUARY 27: Revisions, Proofread, Create Final Draft.

Week of MARCH 05: Final Copy finished.

WEDNESDAY MARCH 14: Post to blog promoting my project; an essay reflection to catalyst.

My Measures of Success:

My project will be a success when I reach the amount of required sources, outline a paper with an effective thesis statement broken down and explained with empirical evidence, and meeting the standards and requirements of the project outlines.

Whew! I can sit back and relax now that I am all through with the discussion leader presentation. When I was approaching this topic of twitter, I knew that I wanted to do a few things: (1) give an overview of exactly what twitter looks like, and how it works, (2) get people to understand #hashtags and how fun they are, and finally (3) present some relevant media stories about twitter to make it a more fun and engaging presentation.

The first aspect of this was a little pointless after Kathy’s presentation on twitter, so that part was pretty quick in my presentation. But the other parts, especially the #hashtaghorror was GREAT! Everyone seemed really responsive, and that was exactly what I was going for. I was a little nervous at first, but it went away quickly, because all of the students are really nice and encouraging. I believe it would have been much harder if they weren’t engaging in the conversation and would have just sat there. All in all, it was a great experience that allowed me to gain some skills and knowledge about twitter, and hopefully share that with my fellow classmates as well.
